Protesters march to Antioch City Hall, call for firing of cops who sent racist texts ANTIOCH — Outside police headquarters, a small crowd of residents, organizers and activists gathered peacefully Tuesday afternoon to register sorrow and outrage, as well as resolve toward change, before marching together toward City Hall to attend a scheduled City Council meeting. Many within the gathering wore T-shirts with slogans calling for firings of specific Antioch police officers who last week were revealed to have sent racist and homophobic text messages, which were discovered during an FBI investigation of at least a dozen Antioch and Pittsburg officers.Civil rights attorneys John Burris and Adante Pointer addressed the crowd gathered Tuesday, as did parents of those victimized by police officers mentioned in the texts.Kathryn Wade, whose son, Malad Baldwin, sued the city in 2015 after Antioch officers beat and injured him said she is still waiting on an autopsy after Baldwin’s death in 2021. “The officers’ texts about my baby made me feel like he died all...

SF Giants’ skid reaches 5 games with loss to Marlins, lose Alex Wood in the process

SF Giants’ skid reaches 5 games with loss to Marlins, lose Alex Wood in the process MIAMI — Already beaten up and backsliding, the Giants lost their fifth straight game Monday night and a member of their starting rotation in the process.Starter Alex Wood left in the third inning after straining his hamstring, and the Giants’ bullpen was unable to hold on to another early lead, falling 4-2 to the Marlins, who got a three-run home run from Jazz Chisholm Jr. that proved to be the difference in the game.Having already clinched a losing record on this road trip, the Giants dropped their fourth straight series — three to teams that finished below .500 in 2022 — and will throw Alex Cobb in Wednesday’s series finale as they look to avoid a sweep and a sixth straight loss. They have lost all four games on this trip against the Tigers and Marlins, neither of whom won 70 games last season, despite holding leads in all four games.“It kind of feels like we’re just falling asleep at the wheel right now,” said outfielder Mike Yastrzemski, who gave the...

Robot shuttles at San Jose airport? Major transit plan moves forward

Robot shuttles at San Jose airport? Major transit plan moves forward An effort to connect a 3.5-mile gap between San Jose Mineta International Airport and Diridon Station may get a Star Trek-like solution.Despite skepticism from transit enthusiasts and the local bus unions, San Jose councilmembers on Tuesday gave their initial approval on what could ultimately become an army of robotic shuttles ferrying passengers between the two travel hubs at a cost of up to $500 million. The project, which could get underway by 2028, comes as the city’s airport and Diridon Station experience increased demand but no efficient public transit option to link them. It currently takes two buses or an Uber to make the journey. In its unanimous approval on Tuesday, the council voted to explore working with a local startup called Glydways, whose driverless shuttles would carry up to four passengers on a designated driveway at a maximum speed of 31 miles per hour. Since the shuttle would run at a continuous speed, officials from Glydways said the journey could take aro...
