Al Jazeera English quietly removed an episode of its current affairs show from YouTube, in which one guest said it would be political “suicide” for Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman to normalize relations with Israel amid its war on Gaza. “He would not probably survive as the future king of Saudi Arabia, if he goes ahead and normalizes in this context of war,” said Madawi Al-Rasheed, a visiting professor at the London School of Economics’ Middle East Center, during an interview last week on Al Jazeera English’s “UpFront.” She was invited onto the show, hosted by Marc Lamont Hill, to discuss the risks of escalation in the Middle East amid Israel’s ongoing siege and bombing campaign of Gaza. Al Jazeera English posted the episode online and promoted it on social media, directing users to watch it on YouTube (such tweets are still live). The YouTube link, however, no longer works; the video is marked as “unavailable” and “private.” The episode no longer ...

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Republican David Owen defeated Democrat Susanna Gibson in a Virginia House of Delegates race that drew attention after revelations that Gibson engaged in sex acts with her husband on a pornographic website.Gibson ran against Owen in one of the state’s most competitive districts after all 100 seats in the House of Delegates were redrawn to conform with the 2020 Census. Many political scientists said Gibson’s chances in Tuesday’s election were doomed after news outlets reported in September about Gibson’s participation in livestreamed sex, which included soliciting payments from viewers in exchange for specific acts. But Gibson, a nurse practitioner, refused to withdraw from the race, and accused Republicans of dirty politics for exposing her conduct. She largely ignored the allegations and, like other Democrats statewide, focused on abortion rights. Republican Gov. Glenn Youngkin has been seeking a ban on abortions after 15 weeks of pregnancy, with exc...

(CNN) — Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has personally and repeatedly thwarted initiatives meant to improve the well-being of teens on Facebook and Instagram, at times directly overruling some of his most senior lieutenants, according to internal communications made public as part of an ongoing lawsuit against the company. The newly unsealed communications in the lawsuit — filed originally by Massachusetts last month in a state court — allegedly show how Zuckerberg ignored or shut down top executives, including Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri and Vice President of Global Affairs Nick Clegg, who had asked Zuckerberg to do more to protect the more than 33 million teens who use Instagram in the United States. The disclosures highlight Zuckerberg’s sway over decisions at Meta that can affect billions of users. And they also shed light on tensions that have occasionally arisen between Zuckerberg and other Meta officials who have pushed to enhance user well-being.Rejecting safety su...

Scott Boras offers insight into Red Sox plans this winter

Scott Boras, the high-powered MLB agent who represents many of the game’s biggest stars, said Wednesday that he’s met with new Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow and was impressed with his commitment to improving the club after two straight last place finishes.“They certainly appeared as though they really wanted to remove themselves from the standing of where they’re at now and get to a competitive level,” said Boras, who spoke to reporters for nearly an hour at the GM Meetings in Arizona. “That was a very clear message on their part.”Breslow himself indicated this week a desire to be aggressive and bolster the club’s big league roster, and addressing the team’s starting rotation is expected to be at the top of his to-do list. Boras, whose clients include top free agent starters Jordan Montgomery and Blake Snell, said the free agent market for starting pitchers is shaping up to be highly competitive and that every star...

Column: Wailing over Craig Counsell’s deal is silly — neither he nor the Chicago Cubs did anything wrong

When Ryne Sandberg signed a then-record four-year, $28.4 million contract extension with the Chicago Cubs during spring training in 1992, baseball executives were apoplectic.Sandberg’s average annual salary of $7.1 million far exceeded the $5.8 million average New York Mets slugger Bobby Bonilla received only a few months earlier. What were the Cubs thinking?Minnesota Twins general manager Andy MacPhail was among those livid over the toppling of baseball’s salary structure.“My 3-year-old son could have made that deal (with Sandberg),” MacPhail said. “To jump from 5.8 (million) to 7.1! That was absolutely stupid a year ahead of free agency. That’s stupidity and timidity.“Sandberg sets an artificial deadline and gets away with it! It’s a terrible deal. We’re going to spend ourselves into oblivion. I don’t blame the players. It’s the owners’ fault. We keep giving it to them.”Two years later, MacPhail left his ...

At the start of the new documentary, “Joan Baez I Am A Noise,” there’s a quote from the writer Gabriel García Márquez that fills the screen for a moment: “Everyone has three lives: the public, the private, and the secret.”It’s a signal that this film has stories to share about the 82-year-old folk singer and political activist that have never before been told. That wasn’t the original intent, Baez says with a wry smile on a recent video call.“It was going to be about the last tour,” Baez says of a run of 2018 farewell shows. “Then at a certain point, I realized I had to let them in farther than just that.“I literally handed them the key, the three directors, to the storage unit,” she says. “In the film, when I walk into it, that’s the first time I I’ve ever been in there.”With that key, co-directors Karen O’Conner, Miri Navasky, and Maeve O’Boyle entered a chamber of treasures that Baez had forgotten existed.“I knew that my mom had kept some stuff,” Baez says. “In the back of my head...
