Newsom vetoes cannabis cafe bill

Published Wed, 12 Feb 2025 09:47:24 GMT

Bad news for Californians hoping to enjoy a joint with their coffee: a bill that would have allowed cannabis cafés has been vetoed by Gov. Gavin Newsom.Assembly Bill 374 was written to allow Amsterdam-style lounges where cannabis products could be sold alongside food and drinks. While some similar businesses currently exist, they do so through a legal loophole, usually by having a technically separate business "deliver" food and drink products to consumption lounge customers. In a message announcing his veto, Newsom said he "appreciate[s] the author's intent to provide cannabis retailers with increased business opportunities and an avenue to attract new customers.""However, I am concerned this bill could undermine California's long-standing smoke-freeworkplace protections," he wrote. "Protecting the health and safety of workers is paramount. I encourage the author to address this concern in subsequent legislation."In response, Assemblymember Matt Haney (D-San Francisco) posted to X, f...

California’s relocation gap is shrinking modestly. My trusty spreadsheet reviewed 2022 Census Bureau stats on interstate migration and found that California departures shrank vs. 2021, while new residents from other states increased. It’s a small break in the “exodus” pattern that helped create the state’s first population shrinkage in recorded history. Here’s the executive summary: Nationally, 5% more Americans made interstate relocations last year vs. 2021. But California exits to other states fell 3% while arrivals grew 10%.Let’s get to the details …Ex-Californians downCalifornia lost more residents in 2022 to elsewhere in the US than any other state – 817,669. The state was followed by New York at 545,598, Texas at 494,077, and Florida at 489,905.But California’s outflow shrank by 23,396 in a year. Ridder solidifies job security and brightens Falcons’ hopes for long-awaited winning season

ATLANTA (AP) — Arthur Smith’s response to his first postgame question regarding Desmond Ridder was quick and strong.“Pretty damn good,” the Atlanta Falcons’ coach said Sunday of his quarterback’s performance in the win over Houston.Smith could have added Ridder’s showing also was important for the quarterback and the team.Ridder’s play lifted the performance of his teammates, including tight end Kyle Pitts and wide receiver Drake London, casting a more optimistic outlook on the season. The 21-19 win over the Texans doesn’t place the Falcons (3-2) in conversations with San Francisco, Philadelphia or Detroit as the most impressive teams in the NFC. But the win does provide hope the Falcons can end their streak of five consecutive losing seasons and return to the playoffs for the first time since 2017.Thanks to Ridder’s career-best 329 yards passing, the Falcons at least temporarily shed their image as a run-first — or even run-only — offense. Dak Prescott calls Cowboys’ loss vs 49ers ‘the most humbling game’ he’s played

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — The frustration from back-to-back playoff losses to San Francisco that both ended on odd plays turned to humiliation for the Dallas Cowboys.Hoping to prove themselves against a fellow NFC contender in a showdown against the 49ers, the Cowboys were run off the field almost from the start. The defense that had been so stingy the first four weeks was completely exposed. The offense took more than a quarter to gain even a single first down and couldn’t move the ball or protect it.It added up to a 42-10 loss to the 49ers on Sunday night that was the most lopsided ever for Dallas in this storied rivalry and that raised more questions about whether the Cowboys are a viable threat to get back to the Super Bowl for the first time in more than a quarter-century.“It’s a punch in the gut, it’s a kick the in the (butt), whatever phrase you want to put on it,” coach Mike McCarthy said. “They beat us in all three phases.”Dak Prescott was under pressure from San Fran...
