Why the power of a US attorney has become a flashpoint in the Hunter Biden case

Published Wed, 12 Feb 2025 08:21:06 GMT

WASHINGTON (AP) — House Republicans grilled Attorney General Merrick Garland on Wednesday about the Justice Department investigation of Hunter Biden in a contentious hearing that delved into aspects of the criminal justice system that typically play out long before the case enters a public courtroom. Many questions from members of Congress centered on the yearslong investigation of the president’s son, who has been under scrutiny for his business dealings and has now been indicted on a federal firearms charge alleging he lied about his drug use as he bought a gun in 2018. Internal Revenue Service agents have claimed in whistleblower testimony the investigation was “slow walked” and the authority of the prosecutor in charge was curtailed by the Justice Department. Garland has strongly denied the allegations, but they could become a main line of attack as an impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden unfolds. While the Hunter Biden case is far from typical, it touches on some of...

Wearing No. 21 just like dad, safety Shilo Sanders leads Colorado’s defense into game at Oregon

Published Wed, 12 Feb 2025 08:21:06 GMT

BOULDER, Colo. (AP) — Colorado safety Shilo Sanders keeps moving up in the rankings — his father’s rankings, anyway, of his favorite kids. Yep, that really is a playful thing between Colorado coach Deion Sanders and his five children. It’s easy to see why Shilo Sanders received a bump in this week’s family poll after his 80-yard interception return for a score over the weekend. That play motivated his proud father to sprint down the field — most he’s run in years, he later admitted — to celebrate with his middle son.Shilo Sanders may not always garner as many headlines as his quarterback brother, Shedeur, but he’s an indispensable part of the 19th-ranked Buffaloes (3-0). Shilo Sanders earned the Pac-12 defensive player of the week honors for his interception and a forced fumble in a 43-35 win over Colorado State in double overtime. What’s more, he’s the current pick to top his father’s favorite kid list. And yep, that’s an actual betting thin...

Prosecutors will lay out case against officers in the death of Elijah McClain

Published Wed, 12 Feb 2025 08:21:06 GMT

BRIGHTON, Colo. (AP) — Prosecutors are expected to present opening statements after jury selection wraps up Wednesday in the trial of two police officers charged in the 2019 death of Elijah McClain, a Black man who was detained while walking in a Denver suburb. In the first of several trials stemming from the death of McClain, lawyers for the two sides are expected to paint contrasting pictures of the deadly struggle between the officers and the 23-year-old, who was stopped by police while returning home from a convenience store. He was unarmed. One question jurors could be asked to decide is whether it was lawful for officers Randy Roedema and Jason Rosenblatt to detain and use force against McClain, who a 911 caller had reported as being suspicious. If prosecutors can convince jurors the stop was unjustified, that would undermine any argument that McClain’s injuries were a result of the officers just doing their jobs. Elijah McClain’s manner of death remains ‘undetermined’ in amen...

PLACER COUNTY, California (KOVR) — A teen’s call for help came as he became stuck hundreds of feet up in Placer County Monday. The Placer County Sheriff’s Office says that, just before 6:30 p.m. Monday, it received a call about someone dangling from a rope on the Foresthill bridge. A 19-year-old was swinging from the underside of the bridge, while his friend, 17, was filming.Based on video obtained by Cal Fire but not released to the public, the stunt was successful — until the older teen tried to pull himself back up the rope, hanging about 30 feet. The equipment failed, causing him to be stuck under the catwalk, the sheriff’s office said. And after they determined that they couldn’t get the teen back up to the catwalk themselves, they called 911.“I think it’s a little ridiculous to do something like that,” said Auburn resident Mark Slack. The ridiculous stunt, and even just the mere idea of it, was shocking to people like Slack.“T...

MBTA investigating after two more close calls between Red Line trains, workers

Published Wed, 12 Feb 2025 08:21:06 GMT

Two near misses between MBTA trains and workers along the tracks are coming to light, after the federal transit officials blasted the MBTA last week for a number of near misses over the past month and a half. The latest incident on Monday morning involved a Red Line train and a two-person crew inspecting the tracks between the Harvard and Porter Stations. The MBTA said “a flagger signaled for an approaching train to stop and it did not.” The MBTA said no one was hurt, and while the agency investigates, the train’s driver is out of service.During the investigation, one of the two track inspectors said a similar near miss happened a week earlier in the same area of the Red Line. The MBTA said this near miss, which was previously unreported, happened a week earlier on Sept. 11 and is now under investigation. The Federal Transit Administration criticized the MBTA over four near miss events since the beginning of August. “Based on these incidents, FTA has determined that a ...

The U.S. Department of Defense on Wednesday chose Massachusetts to lead a regional microelectronics hub, positioning the state for growth in a burgeoning industry that the Healey administration hopes will reach a level of significance akin to the state’s life science industry. The federal government awarded $19.7 million to the Northeast Microelectronics Coalition (NEMC) — made up of more than 85 organizations across seven states and led by quasi-public agency MassTech — to go toward “a regional hub that will advance the microelectronics needs of the U.S. Department of Defense while spurring new jobs, workforce training opportunities and investment in the region’s advanced manufacturing and technology centers,” according to MassTech. The coalition submitted the proposal in March to the DoD’s Microelectronics Commons program, which uses funds from the recently passed CHIPS and Science Act to invigorate the country’s domestic semiconductor...
