ST. PETERBURG, Fla, (AP) — New York Yankees right-hander Luis Severino said it was “unnecessary” that the team decided to have him pitch in a controlled minor league intrasquad game on Friday and not in a game with Class A Tampa.Severino has been on the 15-day injured list since the start of the regular season with a right lat strain. He had been originally scheduled to start Wednesday in a Florida State League game. It was first moved to Thursday before being canceled.“I think it was unnecessary not throw in Low-A, but I do whatever they tell me to do,” Severino said on Sunday before the Yankees played at the Tampa Bay Rays. “I just want to go there and try to build my pitch count to where I feel comfortable, and I can come back sooner.”Severino ended up throwing 40 pitches at Steinbrenner Field in Tampa, Florida, in the camp game and felt “pretty good” afterward.“I know they want the best for me, but I’m one step closer now and hopefully I’ll be back on the field...

Dortmund sends Bayern message with 6-0 rout of Wolfsburg

BERLIN (AP) — The Bundesliga isn’t over yet.Karim Adeyemi and Jude Bellingham both scored twice for Borussia Dortmund to send a message to league leader Bayern Munich with a 6-0 rout of Wolfsburg on Sunday.Sébastien Haller and Donyell Malen also scored as Dortmund restored the one-point gap on Bayern with three rounds of the league remaining.Bayern, the 10-time defending champion, had stretched its lead to four points with a win over Werder Bremen on Saturday — piling the pressure on Dortmund, which lost the lead last weekend with a 1-1 draw in Bochum.Wolfsburg hadn’t conceded at all in its previous three games, and clocked eight goals of its own in the last two.But Adeyemi got Dortmund on its way with the opener in the 14th minute, leaping high to beat a defender to Julian Ryerson’s cross, then setting up Haller for the second in the 29th. Inbetween the goals, Dortmund needed goalkeeper Gregor Kobel at his best to deny Patrick Wimmer in a one-on-one with Mats Hummels throwing...

Orioles fall to Braves, 3-2, on walk-off in 12th inning as they drop series after winning 7 straight

The Orioles’ game Sunday against the Atlanta Braves was the earliest they’ll play this season.Baltimore’s bats never woke up.The Braves ended the Orioles’ streak of seven straight series victories as Michael Harris hit a walk-off double off reliever Cionel Pérez in the 12th inning of a nationally televised game that started at 11:37 a.m.Baltimore’s lineup managed just five hits in 40 at-bats and went 1-for-14 with runners in scoring position, offensive futility that spoiled nine stellar innings from its pitching staff and sent the game to extra innings. The Orioles (22-12) took a one-run lead in the 10th on Anthony Santander’s double, but closer Félix Bautista allowed the automatic runner to score in the bottom half to blow his second save of the season. But the lineup stumbled in the 11th and 12th, failing to score the automatic runner in either frame.Mike Baumann bailed out the club’s bats in the 11th by tossing a scoreless inning...

Stefan Bondy: Knicks are toast if Julius Randle doesn’t get out of his playoff funk

MIAMI — The difference was there on Saturday. Obvious to the eye.Jimmy Butler, a competitor and clutch performer at his core, returning from an ankle injury, embracing and enjoying the moment, carrying the Miami Heat because victory was non-negotiable.Smart, deliberate, winning basketball. On the other side was New York’s All-Star, Julius Randle, settling for difficult shots and misfiring, moving at ¾ speed on defense and carrying the posture of a player ready for Cabo. The Game 3 blowout loss ended for Randle, fittingly, with a missed 3-pointer and a South Beach stroll back on defense, allowing Miami’s Cody Zeller to leak out for a breakaway dunk. Randle was immediately subbed out and his latest playoff dud was complete: 10 points, 4-of-15 shooting, four turnovers and two assists. At the risk of invading Captain Obvious’s turf, the Knicks need more from Randle. They got through the first round because Jalen Brunson was brilliant, Mitchell Robinson dominate...

Alberta officials hoping cooler weather and showers slow wildfires

EDMONTON — Cooler temperatures and a bit of rain are expected to deliver some relief for firefighters as they continue to battle wildfires that threaten communities in northern Alberta, but provincial officials warn the reprieve isn’t expected to last long and lightning is sparking additional blazes.Electric transmission company AltaLink posted on Twitter late Saturday that “the incredible work of firefighters” slowed fire growth that was posing a threat to utility lines supplying power to areas west of Edson, including Hinton, Robb and Jasper, and that cooler weather was expected to help, too.Edson itself has already been evacuated and many of its residents are now in Hinton and Jasper, with the Town of Jasper had warned Saturday that there was a possibility the community might lose power. The province said in a wildfire update today that the forecast is favourable for the next few days, with trace amounts of rain and overcast conditions in some of the affected are...
