CHICAGO (AP) — Connor Bedard played in his first preseason game with the Chicago Blackhawks on Thursday night, and fans of the Original Six franchise were ready. The two lower levels of the United Center were mostly full for the exhibition matchup with the St. Louis Blues. The team closed off the upper deck. Blackhawks coach Luke Richardson started Bedard on a line with wingers Taylor Hall and Ryan Donato. The rookie got the loudest cheers of any player when his name was announced before the game.Bedard’s No. 98 jersey was everywhere as fans walked along the United Center concourses prior to the opening faceoff — won by Bedard. Even more fans were contemplating a Bedard jersey — at $250 for an authentic version and $200 for a replica — at the main team store and smaller stands.Chicago went 26-49-7 last season, and then used a surprise win in the NHL draft lottery to take the highly touted Bedard with the No. 1 overall pick. The 18-year-old center from North Vancouver, British Columbi...Bryce Harper flips out on umpire, flips Phillies helmet into stands and then retrieved by kid

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Bryce Harper flipped out on the third base umpire and then flipped his maroon Phillies helmet over the protective netting and into the stands. This was no ordinary souvenir like a foul ball. Hayden Dorfman, a 10-year-old Phillies fan from Voorhees, New Jersey, had an autographed keepsake he could wear home.Dorfman landed the lucky helmet after a few adults clutched it in a scrum in the aisle Thursday night at Citizens Bank Park. Cooler heads prevailed and — at the urging of the boy’s father, Aaron, — the helmet ended up with the beaming fifth grader. The Dorfmans have a partial season-ticket plan and attend about six Phillies games a year in just a few rows behind the home dugout in section 117.The fireworks started when Harper was ejected by third base umpire Ángel Hernández on a checked strike three. Harper seemingly held his swing on a full count against Pirates starter Luis L. Ortiz and started to take off his protective gear when Hernández called out the...Marsh set to return to the top of the order for Australia at the Cricket World Cup in India

BRISBANE, Australia (AP) — A month ago Mitch Marsh thought he may have to return down the order to create room for others in Australia’s preferred starting lineup at the Cricket World Cup despite his recent success batting at the top of the innings. The man who once joked that everyone in Australia hated him because he hadn’t made the most of his chances at international level now appears to be the go-to option as an opener. With Travis Head expected to miss at least the first half of the Oct. 5-Nov. 19 World Cup because of a fractured right hand, and with Steve Smith returning from injury to bat at No. 3, the best direction for Marsh to go is up.And if the big, burly allrounder can form an opening partnership with veteran David Warner like he did with Head in Australia’s series win in India in March, it gives the five-time champions serious firepower to start their innings.Australia captain Pat Cummins all but confirmed the two would open to start the World Cup following his si...Blue Alert: Driver crashes into state parole officers in Colorado Springs

Welcome to Declassified, a weekly humor column.Spare a thought for Mike Beaton. Who? He’s a British Airways pilot who has been sacked after reportedly snorting cocaine off a topless woman before trying to fly a packed passenger plane from Johannesburg to London. Let those of us who haven’t had a day like that at work cast the first stone.Beaton seemingly had some downtime in South Africa and decided to turn it into, er, uptime, revealing the sordid details about his drug-taking and sexploits to a friend by text. An unnamed airline official told The Sun: “This behavior was the opposite of what is expected of British Airways pilots.” Hang on, so they are supposed to blow cocaine out of their nose onto a topless woman? Odd.Alas, Donald Trump has yet to weigh into this international incident.Of course, no one can top Trump when it comes to batshit crazy public utterings. The former golfer-in-chief and cheeseburger aficionado was at it again this week, claimin...Latest news
