Prosecutors will lay out case against officers in the death of Elijah McClain in a Denver suburb

BRIGHTON, Colo. (AP) — Prosecutors are expected to present opening statements after jury selection wraps up Wednesday in the trial of two police officers charged in the 2019 death of Elijah McClain, a Black man who was detained while walking in a Denver suburb. In the first of several trials stemming from the death of McClain, lawyers for the two sides are expected to paint contrasting pictures of the deadly struggle between the officers and the 23-year-old, who was stopped by police while returning home from a convenience store. He was unarmed. One question jurors could be asked to decide is whether it was lawful for officers Randy Roedema and Jason Rosenblatt to detain and use force against McClain, who a 911 caller had reported as being suspicious. If prosecutors can convince jurors the stop was unjustified, that would undermine any argument that McClain’s injuries were a result of the officers just doing their jobs.Roedema and Rosenblatt are both charged with criminally negligent ...

NEW YORK (AP) — President Joe Biden will meet his Brazilian counterpart Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva on Wednesday in New York as the leaders of the Western Hemisphere’s largest democracies seek areas of common ground despite some recent differences on Russia’s war in Ukraine and other matters. The two are expected to discuss labor and the environment. And senior U.S. administration officials who previewed the meeting said the two nations are rolling out a partnership on workers’ rights.Initial hopes that Lula would prove a staunch ally for Biden have been tempered in recent months, with the Brazilian leader voicing opposition on some issues and at times even seeming to thumb his nose at Washington. That has included dismissing allegations of Venezuela’s authoritarianism, calling for decreased dependence on the dollar for global trade and accusing the U.S. of fueling bloodshed in Ukraine by providing military aid. In his speech at the U.N. General Assembly on Tues...

Published Fri, 07 Feb 2025 04:00:50 GMT

LONDON (AP) — Britain’s state-owned health service is operating on holiday-level staffing in England on Wednesday as doctors in the early stages of their careers joined their more senior colleagues in their first-ever joint strike action.Tens of thousands of so-called junior doctors walked off the job for the sixth time since last December in an escalation of their increasingly bitter pay dispute with the British government. The walkout comes a day after their more senior colleagues, commonly known as consultants in Britain, began their third walkout. While on strike, hospitals will provide minimal care similar to Christmas Day, when only emergency procedures are available and routine appointments or procedures are postponed or canceled. National Health Service figures indicate that the strikes have so far affected about 1 million appointments and procedures at a cost of more than 1 billion pounds ($1.2 billion).Consultants are to return to work on Thursday, while junior docto...

98.3 TRY Social Dilemma: Is it cool for a stranger to tell you about food in your teeth?

ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- Today's 98.3 TRY Social Dilemma came from Darcy and it's about etiquette. Here's her email: Get the latest news, weather, sports and entertainment delivered right to your inbox! Hi Jaime. I recently took myself out to lunch during a break from work. I do this often, as I enjoy my own company. Yesterday though, when I was getting ready to leave the restaurant, I was saying a friendly goodbye to the hostess when she stopped me and told me I had food in my teeth. I was humiliated and embarrassed. I immediately went to the ladies' room and took care of the food, but I couldn't believe that a stranger would say something to me like that. A good friend or family member, absolutely, but a stranger?!?!? That seemed so wrong to me. When I told a friend who I work with about it, she said I should be glad the person told me, stranger or not. I disagree. I think it was way overstepping. What do you think? Thanks so much.DarcyWell, I'm with Darcy's coworker on this one...
