VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) — As tens of thousands of people were under evacuation orders across British Columbia and firefighters battled raging wildfires throughout Canada on Sunday, fire chiefs in a region known as a summer destination for families said they’ve made some progress in the struggle. There’s “finally a bit of a glimmer of hope,” West Kelowna Fire Chief Jason Broland told a news conference of the progress being made in the Lake Okanagan region of southern British Columbia, an area of picturesque resort towns surrounded by mountains. “The weather has allowed us to make progress,” he said, adding that crews were able to conduct more traditional firefighting techniques such as putting out hot spots. If “conditions hold as they are,” he said, fire crews will start to see “real progress being made in a measurable way. And that finally is a bit of a glimmer of hope for us.”Meanwhile, hundreds of fires continued to rage across British Columbia and...Career Strikeout Leaders

Boston’s oldest continuous Italian festival wrapped up Sunday after an another eventful weekend of food, music and flying angels. The last day of the 113th Fisherman’s Feast saw another day packed with Italian culture and the famous annual “flight of the angel.”The feast traces it’s origins back to 1503 when over 200 Italian fishermen made a dangerous trek to get a solid marble statue of the Madonna del Soccorso, or Lady of Perpetual Help, to Sciacca, Sicily.Descendants of the fisherman brought their traditions to the U.S. in the early 1900’s, honoring and recreating the historic journey with a procession of the Madonna del Soccorso statue through the North End. This spectacular confetti-heralded “Flight of the Angel” procession arrived again Sunday night. On Friday, the historic festival was plagued with a spree of underaged drinking, police reported. Officers arrested one person Friday night, summonsed five to court, and were working t...Kyle Hendricks reclaims classic form and 3 more takeaways from the Chicago Cubs’ 4-3 win over the Kansas City Royals

If ever the Cubs would need classic Kyle Hendricks it’s now, in the thick of a playoff chase.Marcus Stroman’s right rib cartilage fracture will keep him out indefinitely, and the Cubs hope reliever Drew Smyly will be up to the task when he starts Tuesday, so Hendricks is the next best bet behind Justin Steele. On Sunday, Hendricks delivered during a 4-3 win over the Royals — backed by home runs from Seiya Suzuki and Miguel Amaya — to close out the series 2-1.During a challenging August in which his ERA inflated to 4.00, he showed a little vintage Hendricks, touching 90 mph a couple of times.“Yeah, it’s been a while,” Hendricks said. “I mean, it definitely shows me I’m doing the right things. And I’m where I need to be strength-wise.“You do get a little pumped, and I think the guys get excited behind me when they see it.”That includes manager David Ross, who added, “That was cool, that was really nice. Widett Circle, recently purchased by the MBTA for $255 million, could provide the space for a short-term recovery campus to help the city take control of the burgeoning addiction problems at Mass and Cass as it works to rebuild the Long Island bridge, a South End group proposed.“The challenge for us is not just to eliminate tents, or move people from one location to another, but to begin to address what we’ve heard from people who are there and vulnerable in terms of housing and treatment and a safe space,” said South End Forum Chair Stephen Fox at the announcement of the group’s proposal Friday. The plan, presented by leaders of Newmarket Business Improvement District and the South End Forum, would divert homeless individuals at Mass and Cass to short-term pallet-house communities built in Widett Circle offering mental health, substance abuse, and housing and workforce development assistance. The proposal comes weeks after the mayor announced the troubled Mass...Real-time updates: Hilary reaches San Diego

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Deadly floodwaters inundated streets across Mexico’s arid Baja California on Sunday as Tropical Storm Hilary moved ashore carrying torrential rain into Southern California, while concerns mounted that flash floods could strike in places as far north as Idaho that rarely get such heavy rain.Forecasters said Hilary was the first tropical storm to hit Southern California in 84 years, bringing flash floods, mudslides, high winds, power outages and the potential for isolated tornadoes.Hilary made landfall along the Mexican coast in a sparsely populated area about 150 miles (250 kilometers) south of Ensenada, on a path to hit mudslide-prone Tijuana Sunday evening, threatening the improvised homes that cling to hillsides just south of the U.S. border. At least 9 million people were under flash-flood warnings as heavy rain fell across normally sunny Southern California ahead of the brunt of the storm.
