PARIS (AP) — Nantes is on course to retain its French Cup trophy after beating Lyon 1-0 at home in the semifinals on Wednesday.Midfielder Ludovic Blas settled a tight match with a superb goal in the 57th minute, moving into space to control a high ball on his chest and then spinning to hit a fierce volley past goalkeeper Anthony Lopes.Nantes coach Antoine Kombouaré played seven years for the club as a rugged defender, and last year helped it win the French Cup to end the club’s barren run of 21 years without silverware.Nantes is aiming to win the competition for the fifth time, and to defend the title for the second time after triumphing in 1999 and 2000. Kombouaré’s side will meet the winner of Thursday’s semifinal between second-tier Annecy and top-flight Toulouse.Lyon last won the competition in 2012, but confidence was boosted in coach Laurent Blanc’s team following Sunday’s win at league leader Paris Saint-Germain.However, Lyon’s attack was kept quiet an...

HAMDEN, Conn. MANCHESTER, England (AP) — Marcus Rashford led Manchester United to its first Premier League win in six weeks as Erik ten Hag’s team overcame Brentford 1-0 to move back into the top four on Wednesday.Winning the English League Cup in February underlined the progress overseen by Ten Hag this season, but United has failed to win any of its three league matches since the victory at Wembley.A meek defeat at Newcastle on Sunday led Ten Hag to once again publicly question his players’ hunger, but United showed more character three days later to edge out Brentford in the pouring rain at Old Trafford.Rashford struck the first-half winner from the impressive Marcel Sabitzer’s knockdown, putting the hosts on course for just their fourth Premier League win in 10 matches.United dropped off after the break as Brentford bounced back from a subdued first-half display, but Thomas Frank’s team was unable to eke out an equalizer.David De Gea spread himself to block substitute Kevin Schade’s effort as...

NEW YORK (AP) — Bryce Harper has taken on-field batting practice for the first time since Tommy John surgery last fall.Harper hit on the field before Tuesday night’s game at Yankee Stadium.“He feels great. It’s not hitting we’re concerned about, it’s sliding,” Phillies manager Rob Thomson said Wednesday. ”We got to get clearance from the doctor on that one first ’cause if he slides headfirst he could rupture, and we’re back to square one.”Harper, a two-time National League MVP, was operated on last Nov. 23. A right-handed thrower and left-handed batter, he was projected to return as a designated hitter by the All-Star break. Harper appears to be on track for an earlier return, and Philadelphia has hm on the 10-day injured list rather than the 60, which would have ruled him out until May 29.“He feels like his right arm is stronger than his left right now because he’s done so much rehab on it,” Thomson said.___AP MLB: https://apnews.com/hub/mlb and https://twitter.co...
